USCGA Superintendent RADM Stosz and Party Visit Campus

On Thursday, Jan. 12, MMI had the pleasure of hosting Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA). Traveling from New London, Conn., with RADM Stosz were additional USCGA staffers LT Christopher Culpepper, LT Lindsey Seniuk and MCPO Lloyd Pierce. While visiting Marion, the Admiral's party met with senior staff, Service Academy Program instructors and USCGA-track cadets. A campus tour for the group showcased MMI classrooms and science labs, the historic Chapel, athletic facilities and renovated barracks.

MMI's Coast Guard Scholars and self-prep cadets (56 total) had the opportunity to spend time with RADM Stosz and her staff during a private lunch and afternoon awards ceremony. Speaking to the cadets, RADM Stosz stressed the importance of setting goals and time management as preparation for a successful transition to the Academy.

The 2011-12 SAP class at MMI is the largest on record, with 136 cadets seeking U.S. Service Academy appointments. Program director LTC Gerry Lewis, USA (Ret) reports on some fall SAP highlights:

  • Representatives from four U.S. Service Academies made campus visits this fall to meet with SAP cadets, both sponsored and non-sponsored and to provide guidance during their year-long program at MMI. Visiting Academy reps included: Chief Lonergan, USCGA; General Calabro, USMA; Captain Wallace, USNA; and General Kelly, USAFA.

  • West Point cadet Megan Moore, MMI SAP class of 2010, returned to Marion for Parents’ Weekend 2011, where she addressed cadets and their parents.

  • Siblings attending MMI together are nothing new, but the 2011-12 SAP class includes a brother/sister pair who are both Coast Guard scholars. Born fifteen months apart, Raddae and Rodney Chew have received scholarships from the Coast Guard Academy to attend MMI. “It was my idea to enroll in the SAP program. I applied first,” she says.

  • (RIGHT) Drs. Sam and Susan Stevenson (MMI’s Naval Academy advisor and Executive Vice President) traveled to Colorado this fall to attend the Falcon Foundation Ball, where they reconnected with former MMI cadets now enrolled at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

  • LTC David and Edith Bauer continued their annual tradition of visiting West Point, his alma mater, and visited with former MMI cadets as well.

An Update from LTJG Adam M. Schuman, USN (MMI SAP class of 2004 / USNA 2008)

"I recently returned from a 7 month Deployment aboard the USS COLE (DDG-67). I served in operations against anti-piracy, serving with NATO forces of 11 other countries to deter and end piracy in the Gulf of Aden and around the Horn of Africa. I was one of two boarding officers who lead teams of 12 enlisted Sailors in more than 10 boardings of suspected pirate vessels. When not deployed/combating piracy I serve as a Surface Warfare Officer and Officer of the Deck underway aboard the USS COLE (Guided Missile Destroyer) which recently honored the 17 Sailors who lost their lives in the terrorist attack 10 years ago this 12OCT10.

"Most importantly about James “Beau” Woods (my best friend, whom I met at MMI in 2004) on 11 October 2009 became my brother-in-law when he married my younger sister, the former Emily Quinn Schuman."

Greetings from West Point! (a letter from Ethan Gleue)

August 14, 2010

LTC Bauer,

I hope the new year is coming along well, I expect the new class of AOGs have now reported and are building a great military foundation for West Point. West Point has been great as a Yearling, today was the A-Day parade and we now have our fresh class of Plebes. I have not met any MMI Cadets in the class of 2014, I hope to meet some of them soon. Those of us from Alpha Company in 2013 are still extremely close, we are planning to take several trips together this year. I have attached a picture of us at Camp Illumination Ball when we were promoted at the end of Camp Buckner and one from our Plebe Christmas together. The summer went quite well, I earned my Air Assault wings before Camp Buckner. At Camp Buckner, those of us who worked hard and focused at Marion did very well. We were often mistaken for Cadets who had completed basic training or had done combat tours before coming to West Point. ...

Thank you again for all of your help and I am excited to see you later this fall.

Very Respectfully,
Cadet Corporal Ethan Gleue
