A native of Marion, Lieutenant Colonel Bauer attended MMI 1955-56, received a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy in 1960 and an MAT in History/Education from the University of Florida. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and did further studies at Kansas State University and Judson College.

LTC Bauer joined the MMI staff in 1984 as Deputy Commandant, serving in that position for 10 years. Since 1994, he has chaired the History and Social Science Department at MMI, where he is responsible for the instruction and development of American, Military and World History classes. He also serves as the advisor for West Point Association of Graduates Scholars, sponsors the Normandy Society and is a member and past president of the MMI Faculty Senate.

As a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army from 1960-1984, he held a number of command and staff positions including Professor of Military Science, Davidson College, N.C. (1982-1984); Director of War Plans Division, SETAF, Vicenza, Italy (1979-82); Assistant Professor of Military History, U. S. Military Academy (1976-79); Director of Foreign Language Training Requirements, Defense Language Institute, Washington , DC (1972-75); Assistant Professor of Military Science, University of Florida (1967-70); Artillery Operations Staff Officer, II Field Force Vietnam (1966-67); and other Artillery assignments in the U.S., Korea, and Italy.

LTC Bauer has consistently been listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He is also a two-time winner of the MMI Faculty of the Year award. At St. Wilfrid’s Episcopal Church, he is a member and past Senior Warden of the vestry and serves as a licensed Lay Minister. LTC Bauer is also a member of the Alabama Historical Association, the Perry County Historical Association and the Association of the U.S. Army.

LTC Bauer is married to the former Edith Crane, a 1955 graduate of Judson College. They have two children and three grandchildren. The Bauers travel to West Point each fall to see former MMI cadets and to coordinate with USMA Admissions, the Association of Graduates Scholarship Director, and the History Department. They also enjoy foreign travel each summer.

Lieutenant Colonel Carlos G. Lewis, United States Army, (Retired), is the Director of the General Bruce K. Holloway Service Academy Preparation (SAP) Program.
 

He graduated from Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce Degree in 1962 and was commissioned in the Army Transportation Corps. Lieutenant Colonel Lewis has a Master of Business Administration Degree from The University of Alabama.

In the Army, LTC Lewis served in both Transportation and Aviation units. Tours of duty include Car Repair Shop Superintendent, 763 Transportation Battalion, Ft. Eustis, VA; Platoon Commander, 183 Reconnaissance Airplane Company, Vietnam; Chief Instructor, Transportation School Brigade, Ft. Eustis, VA; Detachment Commander, 173 Assault Helicopter Company, Vietnam; S-4, 11th Combat Aviation Battalion, Vietnam; Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer, 25th Supply and Transport Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, Hawaii; and Professor of Military Science, Marion Military Institute, 1979-1984, and the Senior Army Instructor, 1984-2004. In 2004 LTC Lewis became the Director of the Service Academy Preparation Program.
 

LTC Lewis’ decorations, medals, badges, citations and campaign ribbons awarded include: The Distinguished Flying Cross; The Bronze Star; Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster); Air Medal (9); Army Commendation Medal; The Senior Army Aviation Badge; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/Palm (2 awards); Army Service Ribbon (1); and Expert (Pistol) Badge.
 

LTC Lewis and his wife, Wanda, have a son, Gerald, and a daughter, Kim, both of whom are graduates of Marion Military Institute. Gerald is retired from the United States Postal Department and Kim is a school teacher.
