Alumni Weekend 2011: A RECAP

Alumni Weekend 2011 entertained hundreds of Marion Military Institute alumni and friends from April 7-10 with a great lineup of campus events. Thursday’s Alumni Brigade Fish Fry at the Excess House kicked-off the clasmate reunions. On Friday morning, the first Tiger Classic 5K and 1Mile fun run/walk raised $1,600 for the Y-ME Breast Cancer Foundation. The annual Alumni Golf Tournament and Tour of Historic Marion each attracted 30+ guests. Friday afternoon, Col. and Mrs. David Mollahan welcomed guests to the President’s Quarters for a casual garden party featuring the sounds of the Grasshopper String Band.

MMI also hosted on-campus meetings for three groups: former White Knights, the MMI Alumni Brigade and the Marine Corps League of Alabama, who presented a $16,00 scholarship to Cadet Drake Phillips. During the Alumni Brigade Annual Membership Meeting, new Board Members were voted in.

Saturday’s festivities showcased the Corps of Cadets, with the Swamp Fox and White Knight demonstrations and choral performance drawing large crowds. Following a BBQ lunch, the full-dress parade honored Alumnus of the Year, Mr. John Hunter '71 of Hilton Head, S.C. The John Hunt Morgan Leadership Award was presented to Battalion Commander Jeremy Brann, who also received the Arthur Wilkerson Award. A Morgan's Raiders ceremony followed.

On Saturday, April 9, MMI hosted a funeral service for alumnus Major David E. McCollum, who lost his life in a test flight crash on April 2, 2011 in Roswell, NM. In accordance with the family's wishes, the "David Ellis McCollum Endowed Aviation Scholarship" has been established through the MMI Foundation and will help cadets who need assistance with the cost of our flight program.

The Selma Country Club was full for the closing ceremonies and banquet on Saturday night, when the Alumni Brigade 2011 Honored Teachers were recognized: W. Stuart Harris of Lillian, James Jackson of Foley, the late Eugene Marsh, and Jim Waters of Marion, assistant pastor of Marion United Methodist Church. Dancing to live music from Southern Pride ended the evening's celebration, which continued at the Hampton Inn hospitality suite.
