MMI  Signs Transfer Agreement with AUM

3.24.11   MMI recently celebrated a new relationship with Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). In a March 23 ceremony in the historic MMI Chapel, MMI President Col. David J. Mollahan and AUM Chancellor John G. Veres III signed a transfer agreement indicating that the two institutions will establish processes to facilitate the seamless transfer of MMI graduates to AUM for the purpose of earning a bachelor’s degree. After earning an associate’s degree, MMI students will now be guaranteed acceptance in AUM with up to 64 awarded credits transferring if they have a minimum of C in each course, a cumulative GPA of 2.0, are listed in good standing, and complete the AUM application process.

Co-authored by retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert J. Russell, Jr., Professor of Military Science at AUM, the transfer agreement will be a natural bridge for MMI graduates interested in AUM’s new Organizational Leadership major. Russell explained that AUM will also begin dual advising MMI cadets in their final semester to get them on track for courses at AUM.

Sharing in military history, AUM counts two former chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff among its alumni.

Service Academy Prep Success Highlighted at State Board of Education Meeting

Feb. 2011 - MMI Cadet Chelsea Kay, of Sacramento, Calif., was selected to address the State Board of Education (BOE) at its Feb. 10 work session in Montgomery. Each month, a student representing one of the Alabama Community Colleges addresses Board members to highlight his or her school and academic program. Enrolled in MMI’s Service Academy Prep program, Cadet Kay recently received her appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Addressing the BOE in person, Cadet Kay spoke of her military aspirations and experience in Marion thus far. She has known since the 9/11 attacks that she wanted to serve her country. As a high school freshman, she had her sights on attending a military academy.

Though disappointed, at the time, that she was not selected to go straight to West Point right out of high school, she is thankful every day that she has had the opportunity to attend MMI because she knows that she will be better prepared, having had the MMI experience, once she gets to the Academy.

She chose to attend MMI for several reasons: She found the MMI website gave her a true picture of cadet life at MMI. Also, her would-be faculty advisor, LTC David Bauer, USA (Ret), routinely checked in with her parents to see if she had made a decision as to the school that she would attend. Cadet Kay also thinks the instructors at MMI are great because they take time for the students and work with them to make sure that they “get” the material.

"It was a privilege to have our Service Academy Program represented before the State Board of Education,” noted Dr. Susan Stevenson, MMI Dean of Academics. “Cadet Kay is a shining example of our SAP cadets—outstanding young men and women who set their sights on attending a Service Academy and thereby, dedicating themselves to a life in service to our country."

MMI is proud to count Cadet Kay as one of its many students from across the nation who successfully transfers to one of the U.S. Service Academies. The MMI faculty and staff wishes her the best as she moves forward to join the West Point class of 2015.

2 to 4 Transfer Program Kicks Off

August 2010 - Representatives of the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) and the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AAICU) paved the way for two-year college students to enjoy a seamless transfer to an independent four-year institution.

A signing ceremony conducted on July 1, 2010 kicked off the new 2 to 4 Transfer Program, which is similar to the Statewide Transfer and Articulation Reporting System (STARS) initiated in 1998 to allow Alabama community college graduates to transfer to any public four-year institution in the state. Now, through the 2 to 4 Transfer Program, ACCS students can be confident that their credits will also transfer to participating independent colleges.

Effective July 1, ten of AAICU’s 14 member colleges and universities set articulation agreements in place. Officials anticipate the additional colleges will sign agreements before the end of the year. They are Birmingham-Southern College, Concordia College, Faulkner University, Huntingdon College, Judson College, Spring Hill College, Stillman College, Talladega College, United States Sports Academy and University of Mobile.

For more information, contact one of the four-year institutions listed above or check out the 2 to 4 Transfer Program website:
