STUDENT RECORDS AND PRIVACY RIGHTS OF STUDENTS

Marion Military Institute maintains an official academic record in the Office of the Registrar for each cadet.  This permanent academic record includes all completed coursework, grades, and grade point averages.  Access to academic records is provided in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99), a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.  The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education and affords students certain rights with respect to their education records; click here to read a summary of those rights.

Under this same Federal law, appropriately designated "directory information" can be released by the Institution without a written request.  Click here to read a description of "directory information" and your rights pertaining to its release.  A "Do Not Release Directory Information" form can be obtained in the Registrar's Office or by following the provided link.

To learn more about FERPA please visit http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html.

Procedures for cadet access and other access to the academic records are published annually in the MMI Cadet Manual.

PARENT INFORMATION

Transcripts:

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.  FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights, however, transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

In order for us to release a transcript to or discuss a student's account with a parent, the student must authorize us to do so.  Release of Information Forms are available to students in the Registrar's Office and must be filled out in person by the student.

Proof of Enrollment:

Parents often need proof of enrollment of their children for insurance or other purposes.  Generally, a release signed by your child is not required for us to provide this information to you.  Our standard proof of enrollment letter contains only appropriate directory information (including dates of attendance) which may be released unless your child has notified us to restrict the release of directory information.  In this case your child must submit a signed release to the Registrar before we can produce the proof of enrollment letter for you.
